The third great voyage of French pacific explorer Dumont d'Urville between 1837 and 1840 carried on board the eminent phrenologist Pierre-Marie Dumontier who made a series of plaster life casts of people encountered during the voyage. These full size life casts included Maori subjects. Fiona Pardington has photographed more than 50 these casts at the Musee de l'Homme and the results are published in this significant and beautiful book. The photographs are accompanied by essays by a number of distinguished scholars of pacific history.
