In 1943 General Montgomery wanted the 2nd New Zealand Division to take the hiilltop town of Orsogna, a key part of the German's Bernhardt Line, in order for British forces to march on Rome. Exhausted from its Middle East Campaign and with new troops replacing those who had refused to return from leave, the Division was not the force it had once been.
