These letters record the beginnings of a commercial enterprise which subsequently grew to prosperity and fame as Moran and Cato Pty Ltd. Above all, they showed to young people growing in themselves, intellectually, socially and spiritually; but also growing together in love. The prologue, epilogue and additional notes by the editor, provide a full and vivid account of of the vicissitudes and aspirations of the family's most involved -- the Catos, the Bethunes and the Moran's -- as they sought to establish their families in Australasia.

Overall, it offers insights into the social life, both of the small provincial town of Invercargill, New Zealand, and of Melbourne, the booming metropolis of the Antipodes in the late 19th century.

Tipped in colour plates and Black & White Photographs. Fold-out family tree to rear. The author/editor is the youngest daughter of Frederick Cato.
