As an escaped POW in 1943, Mason was helped by Italian peasants. 18 years later he returned to visit and tried to arrange installation of a reticulated water pipe in the village in appreciation of the help they had given him. He recounts the troubles it took to have this completed, with recollections of his time as a fugitive during the war.
