Major William Redmond, of the 16th (Irish) Division, Catholic Nationalists fighting for the British at Messines Ridge, died in what he foresaw as a "blood sacrifice for Ireland". Although a staunch advocate for Home Rule who had been imprisoned by the British he still gave his life in the service of the British Crown. This is a study pertinent to all the Irish Nationalist soldiers who put aside their nationalist politics to fight for the Allied cause, in the hope it would lead to independence at home.
