Ballantynes

Author(s): Ogilvie Gordon

Christchurch City & Banks Peninsula | Secondhand

J. Ballantyne and Co. Ltd is best described as a specialist department store, and is as much an institution and destination as a business. This history, written to mark the shop's sesquicentenary, makes it clear why a retailer's survival for 150 years is not just a matter of chance. The shop's timeless philosophy is that the customers come first. Dunstable House was founded in 1854 and was purchased by John Ballantyne in 1872. This volume is virtually a social history of Christchurch. Dunstable House started business only four years after the settlement began and its growth mirrors the evolution of Christchurch itself. Gordon Ogilvie had access to all the firm's records and has produced a lavishly illustrated narrative that is thorough, frank, fair-minded, personable and entertaining.

Near fine condition.
