Description

English geologist Edward H Davis came to New Zealand in 1870. Young but already well-travelled, he ventured into some far corners of the colony to explore and assess it's mining potential - Thames-Coromandel, Taranaki, Nelson, Golden Bay and the Grey Valley. The search for gold, copper, coal and ironsand all drew on Davis's previous experience in Portugal, Colombia and a family background in the iron trade of Northern England. Following his appointment to the New Zealand Geological Survey, he became a member of the small, but influential, scientific community in the colony. Author Mike Johnston has dug deep and wide to bring together this first account of a far-flung and eventful life, so tragically cut short on a West Coast beach.
