The Stewart Islanders

Author(s): Olga Sansom

Southland | Cadsonbury

Olga Sanson is herself a Stewart Islander and grew up in its tradition. She knew its old people and remembers them gratefully and with love. She learned the paths, and the forest and seashore. And- importantly for the readers of this book- she inherited a way with words that enables the reader to share her joys.

Of these, there is a multitude. Old characters, old ships and mills, old stories grim or gay, and always the background: the sea, the birds, the forests and always the 'glowing sky' of the Maori name for this island: Rakiura.

This is, in the most literal sense of the word, a delightful book.
