The writer of this book has spent many years in North Otago. In boyhood he wandered along ancient Maori paths in the valley of the Waitaki river searching for relics amongst the now long obliterated sites of old encampments. In later years he has seen familiar places become unrecognisable by fire, by the plugh and by sheer vandalism. With infinite patience he has gathered rich stores of material relating to the pre-settlement Maori. Here will be found a full account of those mysterious paintings, the handiwork of bygone inhabitants, delineated upon the sides of their rock shelters. Here too are recolded the meanings of many Maori placenames and entertaining legends associated with them.
