Hawke's Bay | Secondhand

Secondhand. Autographed by the author.

That part of Central Hawkes Bay bounded by the rivers Ngaruroro,Tutaekuri and Tukituki is the setting for Elizabeth Hill's historic collection, which is based largely on interviews she conducted with residents post-1981. However, local knowledge and existing archives and records also contributed to her material. Born and educated in the Hawkes Bay, a journalist there and living close to the Ngaruroro River for 36 years, provided essential insights for such a book. Her history is not strictly chronological --- rather episodic --- but deals with a host of topics, prominant peronalities, events, occasions, progress, disappointments and difficfulties, everything from war-stories to show biz, matters medical to controllling those flood-prone rivers.

"New Zealand's rivers have influenced people's lives in a thousand ways, and the Hawke's Bay trio of the Ngaruroro, Tutaekuri and Tukituki is possible the most significant of any in New Zealand in its effects on the land and the people."
