Dan Davin holds a special place in New Zealand literature and in English letters as a writer and publisher. When he died in 1990, and Winnie Davin in 1995, the door closed on more than forty years of hospitality to New Zealand writers and academics who made visiting them in Oxford a priority when overseas. In this book literary figures, family, friends, and colleagues pay tribute to Dan Davin and his contribution to literature through his own work and in fostering writers and writing.

Janet Wilson is a New Zealander who as a doctoral student at St Catherine's College Oxford in the early 1980s became a friend of the Davins. This book researched when she was a senior lecturer in English at Otago University, is part of her ongoing study of New Zealand literature.
