It contains "The Fires of Dawn", "The Flight of a Villager" and "Tali", novels of three new writers: Benjamin Umba, August Kituai, and Jim Baital, who are struggling to cope with the cultural confusion of an emerging nation.

The written literature of PNG emerged only in the 1960s, arising out of rich oral traditions as more Papua New Guineans were exposed to the English language.
